Turin, October 3, 2025 – Jeff Bezos took the stage at Italian Tech Week. In a long and captivating conversation with John Elkann, he described a world where Earth’s limits will push humanity to expand its infrastructure into space. For Bezos, this is not a fantasy but a logical continuation of human progress, and Blue Origin will be at the center of it.
Gigawatt Data Centers Beyond Earth
Bezos began by addressing a problem that feels increasingly urgent: the world’s digital systems are growing faster than the planet’s capacity to power and cool them. He told the audience that the next stage of our technological expansion will not happen on Earth but above it.
“One of the things that’s going to happen in the next – it’s hard to know exactly when, it’s 10 plus years, and I bet it’s not more than 20 years – we’re going to start building these giant gigawatt data centres in space.”
He explained why space offers such an advantage:
“These giant training clusters, those will be better built in space, because we have solar power there, 24 hours a day. There are no clouds and no rain, no weather.”
According to Bezos, the economics of computing will eventually favor orbit rather than land.
“We will be able to beat the cost of terrestrial data centres in space in the next couple of decades.”
He described this shift as a natural evolution, reminding the audience that we already rely on space for critical parts of daily life.
“It already has happened with weather satellites. It has already happened with communication satellites. The next step is going to be data centres and then other kinds of manufacturing.”
The message was clear. Space is no longer an extension of Earth. It is the next home of industry.
Blue Origin as the Foundation

As Bezos described this new era of space infrastructure, he connected it directly to Blue Origin, that will build the transportation and technology that will make such projects possible.
“Blue Origin will be vital for enabling this next infrastructure in orbit.”
He portrayed Blue Origin not simply as a rocket company but as a provider of the systems that will sustain a permanent human presence beyond Earth. The company’s heavy-lift rocket New Glenn plays a key role in this plan. After years of development, Blue Origin is preparing to enter a new phase of frequent and reusable orbital launches.
Still, Bezos did not ignore the challenges. He acknowledged that the path is difficult and that building reliable, affordable access to space remains the biggest obstacle. Recent layoffs affecting around ten percent of Blue Origin’s workforce and the pressure to accelerate New Glenn’s progress show that even a company backed by one of the world’s wealthiest individuals must fight for efficiency and execution.
Despite these realities, Bezos’s confidence did not waver. His tone suggested that each test, delay, and correction brings Blue Origin closer to its purpose, building the highway to space that future industries will depend on.
From Artificial Intelligence to Orbital Life
Bezos also touched on artificial intelligence, drawing a connection between today’s rapid growth in computing and tomorrow’s need for new frontiers.
“We should be extremely optimistic that the societal and beneficial consequences of AI, like we had with the internet 25 years ago, are for real and there to stay.”
He urged the audience to separate the hype from the long-term value. The implication was that AI’s hunger for data and energy will soon demand an environment like space, where clean and constant power is limitless.
A Message to Europe

Italian Tech Week has become one of Europe’s key events for innovation, and Bezos used it to encourage the continent not to stand on the sidelines. He implied that the next chapter of the space economy will need global cooperation and that Europe has both the talent and tradition to be part of it.
Bezos’s words carried a challenge as much as an invitation. The world is entering an era when data, power, and human expansion will no longer be confined to the planet. Blue Origin, he said, is working to make that transition real, but the opportunity belongs to everyone willing to build in orbit.
