Venus, with its sulfuric acid clouds and scorching temperatures, has long remained an enigma for scientists. To truly understand a planet’s geology and climate, it’s crucial to decipher its internal workings. Siddharth Krishnamoorthy from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Daniel Bowman from Sandia National Laboratory suggest a novel solution: seismometers mounted on high-altitude balloons.
While traditional seismometers require a solid ground anchor, there’s a variant known as the infrasound seismometer, which detects pressure waves created by seismic activity through the atmosphere. This technology might be especially suitable for Venus, particularly in its higher cloud layers, which have conditions resembling Earth’s.
This innovation not only offers a fresh perspective on space research but might also solve the challenge of exploring a planet with such extreme surface conditions as Venus.
