In a heartwarming ceremony aboard the International Space Station (ISS), Walter Villadei and his Ax-3 mission colleagues bid farewell, preparing for their journey back to Earth. With their return date pending due to weather conditions near Florida’s coast, the crew’s departure marks the end of an intense two-week scientific endeavor in orbit.
The Ax-3 mission, a private endeavor comprising four members, concluded with exchanges of warm embraces and expressions of gratitude. Andreas Mogensen of the European Space Agency and the commander of Expedition 70 praised the team’s efforts. In response, Colonel Walter Villadei of the Italian Air Force acknowledged the overwhelming support and hospitality provided by the Expedition 70 crew during their stay.
After his previous talk about the mission, Walter Villadei extended his gratitude towards NASA, Axiom, and SpaceX for facilitating the mission and expressed special thanks to the Italian Air Force and the Italian government for their belief in the mission’s goals. He highlighted the contribution of technology, innovation, and science from Italy and Europe, underscoring the mission’s collaborative spirit.
The mission’s success was a testament to international cooperation, featuring the first Turkish astronaut, Alper Gezeravci, ESA’s Swedish astronaut Marcus Wandt, and Axiom Space commander Michael Lopez-Alegria. Villadei lauded the collaborative effort, stating it was a privilege to work with such a dedicated team.
As the Ax-3 mission team prepares for their return, their parting words remind us of the importance of international collaboration in advancing space exploration. Villadei’s reflections encapsulate the mission’s achievements and the unique opportunity to represent Italy and Europe in the vast expanse of space.
