Mission Goals: Reaching New Heights
Polaris Dawn will launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, with the Crew Dragon capsule taking Isaacman and his team to a record-breaking altitude. The mission plans to reach an apogee of 1,200 kilometers above Earth, which will later be extended to 1,400 kilometers, surpassing the distances typically covered by missions to the International Space Station. This ambitious mission will bring the crew into the South Atlantic Anomaly, a region known for its weaker magnetic field, providing a unique opportunity to study the effects of cosmic radiation on the human body.
One of the most anticipated aspects of Polaris Dawn is the planned extravehicular activity (EVA), or spacewalk. This will be the first time a private crew attempts a spacewalk, a feat that has traditionally been the domain of government astronauts. SpaceX has developed specialized suits for this mission, designed to be lighter and more flexible than those used by NASA. These suits will protect the astronauts during their spacewalk, which will last approximately 15-20 minutes.
