In an unprecedented partnership, Axiom Space and renowned Italian luxury brand Prada are joining forces to design the next-generation space suits for NASA’s Artemis III lunar mission.

Scheduled for 2025, this mission marks the first manned lunar landing since Apollo 17 in 1972. Furthermore, it will be historically significant as it will see the first woman setting foot on the moon. Michael Suffredini, CEO of Axiom Space, expressed the company’s enthusiasm in collaborating with Prada. He emphasized Prada’s expertise in material quality, production techniques, and design will be instrumental in creating suits that ensure astronauts’ comfort and safety on the lunar surface.
Throughout the design process, Prada and Axiom Space teams will work closely to develop innovative solutions that cater to the unique challenges of the lunar environment. Lorenzo Bertelli, Chief Marketing Officer at Prada, highlighted that this collaboration aligns with Prada’s longstanding commitment to technological advancement and design, drawing parallels with their involvement in the America’s Cup in the 1990s.

Technically, the new AxEMU suits will provide astronauts with advanced capabilities for space exploration. Building upon the legacy of NASA’s Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit (xEMU) design, the new suits aim to offer greater flexibility and protection in challenging environments and are equipped with specialized tools for exploration and scientific activities. With this partnership, Axiom and Prada are contributing to the future of space exploration, aiming to deepen our understanding of the moon and beyond.
